Job Title: Manager Quality Control | Req ID: 17385 | HR Contact: Sheena WATSON | Location: Building Envelope - Muscle Shoals, AL
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Quality Manager owns product quality and process control for a continuous TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) roofing membrane manufacturing operation — from incoming raw material qualification through in-process control, finished goods release, and shipment. This leader manages the plant quality organization (1 Quality Supervisor and 12 Quality Lab Technicians operating across a 24/5 shift schedule), maintains and matures the ISO 9001 Quality Management System, ensures compliance with applicable product standards and code approvals (ASTM D6878, UL, FM Approvals, ICC-ES, CRRC as applicable), and drives a data-driven, root-cause problem-solving culture across the site.
WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH
Quality Management System & Compliance
- Own the site Quality Management System; ensure conformance to internal, ISO 9001, customer, and regulatory/legal requirements, and lead certification, surveillance, and recertification audits.
- Maintain product listings and third-party certifications (UL, FM, ICC-ES, ASTM D6878 conformance, CRRC ratings) including required ongoing testing, follow-up inspections, and documentation.
- Lead internal audit program; manage corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) with verified root cause and effectiveness checks.
- Plan and conduct periodic management review meetings with defined inputs, outputs, and follow-up actions.
- Own document control, records retention, and change management for quality-critical procedures and specifications.
Laboratory & Team Leadership
- Lead, develop, and performance-manage a team of 1 Quality Supervisor and 12 Quality Lab Technicians providing 24/5 lab coverage; own staffing, scheduling, training plans, and technician skill certification/qualification matrices.
- Develop the Quality Supervisor as a frontline leader; build bench strength and cross-training to eliminate single points of failure in lab coverage.
- Set clear lab standard work: test frequencies, methods, reaction plans, and escalation protocols aligned to production speed and product changeovers.
Process Control & Product Conformance
- Oversee incoming inspection and qualification of raw materials (TPO resins, scrim/reinforcement, pigments/TiO2, flame retardants, stabilizers, additives); manage supplier quality performance, nonconforming material disposition, and supplier corrective actions.
- Own in-process control for extrusion, calendering, lamination, and winding: thickness/gauge profile, thickness over scrim, sheet width, weld integrity, surface quality, and dimensional stability.
- Manage finished goods testing and release to ASTM D6878 and customer specifications (breaking strength, elongation, tear, puncture, weld/seam strength, heat aging, weathering program sampling).
- Apply SPC to critical-to-quality characteristics; establish control plans, reaction plans, and capability targets (Cp/Cpk) by product and line.
- Own hold/release, nonconforming product control, rework/downgrade disposition, and quarantine discipline; drive scrap and first-pass yield improvement with operations.
Data, Metrics & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and report key quality metrics: cost of poor quality (COPQ), first-pass yield, scrap, customer complaints/claims (PPM and $), audit results, CAPA aging, and lab turnaround time — with root cause and countermeasures.
- Lead structured problem solving (8D, A3, 5-Why, fishbone) on internal failures and customer complaints; build root-cause capability across operations, not just within the lab.
- Partner with Technical/R&D on new product qualifications, formulation changes, trial protocols, and first-article approvals.
- Lead complaint and warranty claim investigations end to end, including field data review and customer-facing technical responses.
Calibration & Test Integrity
- Own the calibration program: ensure accuracy and on-time calibration of all monitoring and measuring devices (lab instruments and in-line gauging), with traceability and out-of-tolerance impact assessments.
- Maintain measurement system integrity through Gauge R&R and MSA studies on critical instruments and test methods.
External Awareness
- Stay current on standards, codes, regulations, and industry developments affecting single-ply roofing membranes (ASTM, UL, FM, ICC-ES, code bodies, SPRI) and translate changes into site requirements.
- Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer/Materials Science, Quality, or related technical discipline.
Required Work Experience: 7+ years of quality experience in continuous-process manufacturing, including 3–5 years of direct leadership of salaried and hourly teams; experience leading through a supervisor preferred.
Travel Requirements: occasional travel to customers, suppliers, and sister plants (up to ~10%).
- Working command of core quality tools: SPC, FMEA, control plans, Gauge R&R/MSA, and process capability studies.
- Demonstrated success leading a root-cause problem-solving culture (8D, A3, 5-Why) and driving measurable reductions in scrap, complaints, or COPQ.
- Hands-on experience with ISO 9001 implementation, maintenance, and audits (internal and registrar).
- Strong data analysis skills; able to build and present quality performance reviews to plant and division leadership.
- Split time between office, quality lab, and manufacturing floor in a 24/7 continuous operation; regular gemba presence on all shifts.
- Occasional off-shift and weekend availability for quality escalations, customer issues, and audits.
Preferred
- Experience in polymer extrusion, calendering, film/sheet, or roofing membrane manufacturing (TPO, PVC, EPDM).
- Familiarity with ASTM D6878 and third-party listing/approval processes (UL, FM Approvals, ICC-ES).
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification; ASQ CQE/CQM certification a plus.
- Knowledge of Lean principles and tools (standard work, visual management, kaizen).
- Experience with LIMS, quality modules in ERP/MES systems, and statistical software (Minitab or equivalent).
Additional Requirements:
- Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
