Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager

 

 

ABOUT THE ROLE 

The EHS Regional Manager is responsible for overseeing environmental, health, and safety programs for assigned manufacturing and distribution sites within a designated region. This position is pivotal in ensuring all locations maintain effective policies, procedures, plans, systems, business practices, standards, and controls to identify, assess, monitor, and manage EHS risks and opportunities in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The EHS Regional Manager will drive the alignment of site-level EHS practices with corporate standards, foster a strong safety culture, and ensure continuous improvement in EHS performance. This role requires an individual who can demonstrate initiative, make sound decisions, take responsibility for those decisions, and react effectively to changing conditions that necessitate rapid shifts in priorities. 

Travel Requirement: 25% to 50%

 

WHAT YOU’LL ACCOMPLISH

Program Development & Strategic Implementation:

  • Develop, implement, and administer comprehensive EHS compliance programs in alignment with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Drive the operational implementation of EHS strategies and initiatives to cultivate a culture of compliance, proactive safety, environmental excellence, impact reduction, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and maintain local and regional EHS written programs, procedures, and policies to ensure compliance and alignment with overarching company EHS standards.
  • Interpret EHS laws, regulations, and judicial/regulatory interpretations (with advice from company counsel) to develop and implement appropriate policies relevant to the business.
  • Monitor all EHS policies, practices, and processes to determine efficiency and effectiveness; recommend improvements to achieve desired results.
  • Assist facilities with Environmental Management System (EMS) implementation, including monitoring metrics, coordinating audits, conducting management reviews, and achieving targets.

 

Compliance, Risk Management & Incident Prevention:

  • Maintain an effective system for identifying, reporting, investigating (including root cause analysis), tracking, and trending EHS incidents; ensure appropriate countermeasures are implemented.
  • Implement and oversee EHS audit processes to assess regulatory compliance, identify deficiencies, and ensure collaboration with operating facilities to proactively resolve gaps and develop action plans.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs) and risk assessments to identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Monitor facility permits and ensure understanding of and compliance with all reporting requirements.
  • Provide guidance on regulatory/legislative matters (e.g., OSHA, NIOSH, ANSI, NFPA, EPA) and oversee government compliance inspections and activities.
  • Prepare and submit environmental regulatory reports according to application requirements.
  • Review contractor safety programs and monitor their EHS performance and hours worked.

 

Culture, Engagement & Training:

  • Model behaviors consistent with a target of zero incidents and 100% environmental compliance.
  • Engage, communicate, and influence others across the region to develop and sustain a strong EHS culture.
  • Review and develop employee EHS recognition and incentive programs.
  • Review and develop program requirements to encourage 100% employee participation in safety programs.
  • Monitor and support site Safety Committees.
  • Ensure comprehensive EHS training is developed, delivered, and completed by all relevant personnel.
  • Serve as the regional EHS Subject Matter Expert, providing coaching, guidance, and support to site personnel.

 

Reporting & Response:

  • Report monthly EHS metrics to corporate management as required.
  • Direct EHS emergency response activities and ensure preparedness for unplanned events.
  • Coordinate with Communication and Legal departments regarding stakeholder and public messaging on EHS matters.
  • Ensure implementation of relevant security programs and associated activities as they pertain to EHS.

 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5 years of progressive experience in an EHS leadership role, preferably within a manufacturing or distribution environment.
  • Proven experience managing EHS programs across multiple sites.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local EHS regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc.).
  • Experience with ISO certification programs (e.g., ISO 14001, ISO 45001) is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership, communication, training, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and develop effective solutions.
  • Proficiency in EHS management software and standard office applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, manage complex projects, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHMM) are a plus.
