ABOUT THE ROLE
Amrize Cement Inc. is seeking a highly skilled and strategic Automation Project Manager to lead the design, implementation, and optimization of control systems at our industrial cement manufacturing facility. In this role, you will be responsible for managing capital automation projects from conception through commissioning, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest safety and quality standards.
The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between project management and deep technical expertise in industrial automation, focusing on optimizing continuous processes such as raw milling, pyroprocessing (kiln operations), finish milling, and material handling.
Position Location: Amrize Alpena Cement Plant 1435 Ford Avenue, Alpena, Michigan 49707
Relocation: Position is eligible for relocation assistance for candidates outside the Alpena, MI area.
WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH
- Lead the full lifecycle of automation capital projects, including scope definition, feasibility studies, budgeting, scheduling, execution, and commissioning.
- Manage project budgets, track expenditures, and provide regular progress reports to plant leadership and stakeholders.
- Coordinate and manage external contractors, system integrators, and equipment vendors to ensure adherence to technical specifications and project timelines.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive project documentation, including functional specifications, P&IDs, electrical schematics, and operator training manuals.
- Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Education: Bachelor's degree
- 5–7+ years of progressive experience in industrial automation and control systems engineering.
- 3+ years of dedicated project management experience managing capital projects (preferably exceeding $1M+ in scope).
Additional Education Preferred: Master's degree
Field of Study Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field.
Required Work Experience: Experience in heavy continuous-process manufacturing is required; direct experience in cement, mining, or mineral processing is highly preferred.
Required Technical Skills:
- Deep proficiency in programming and configuring major PLC/DCS platforms (e.g., Siemens PCS7 / S7, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, ABB 800xA, or similar).
- Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Profinet, Modbus).
- Ability to read, interpret, and create electrical schematics, loop drawings, and P&IDs.
- Familiarity with plant historians and data analytics tools (e.g., OSIsoft PI).
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex electro-mechanical systems.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, capable of driving consensus across diverse teams.
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification or equivalent is strongly preferred.
Travel Requirements: 25% (estimated)

- Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
