Job purpose
The Entry-Level Environmental Specialist will work directly with facility leadership and
senior safety personnel to support day-to-day regulatory compliance, hazardous waste
tracking, and recordkeeping for our thermal treatment operations. This role offers
hands-on experience in environmental reporting, internal auditing, and regulatory
alignment with EPA, and OSHA standards.
Duties and responsibilities
- Documentation & Recordkeeping: Assist in maintaining and updating the facility's
Permit Operating Record, waste analysis plans, contingency plans, and employee
training logs. - Hazardous Waste Handling Support: Learn and assist with hazardous waste
characterization, labeling, manifesting, storage time limit tracking, and
recordkeeping under 40 CFR Parts 260–270 and 30 TAC Chapter 335. - Operational Monitoring: Assist with tracking permit conditions, thermal treatment
unit operating parameters, and environmental monitoring data. - Compliance Inspections: Participate in routine internal compliance audits and self-
inspections to identify and resolve potential issues proactive before official reviews. - Reporting Assistance: Support senior staff in gathering data and preparing routine
regulatory reports (e.g., Biennial Reports, exception notifications, permit deviation
reports). - Training & Safety Support: Assist in delivering and tracking required initial and
annual refresher training (RCRA, safety, environmental) for facility personnel. - Regulatory & Emergency Prep: Help support regulatory inspection readiness and
participate in emergency preparedness planning for energetic materials handling. - Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with operations, safety, and
engineering staff to ensure day-to-day activities align with regulatory permits.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental
Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related scientific/technical field
(completed or near completion). - Experience: Entry-level (0–2 years of relevant internship, co-op, or academic
lab/project experience). - Technical Knowledge: Basic coursework or familiarization with federal
(EPA/RCRA) and state environmental regulations. - Prior internship or academic project experience related to industrial compliance,
hazardous waste handling, or environmental sampling. - Initial RCRA or OSHA 24/40-Hour HAZWOPER coursework/certification.
Key Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail and strong document organization abilities.
- Proficiency in standard office software (Microsoft Excel, Word).
Physical requirements
- Ability to pass required background checks and obtain facility clearance as
needed. - Willingness to learn specialized hazardous waste, air emissions, and thermal
